Ann MAXWELL (also k/a Ann McMILLAN) was convicted at Glasgow, Scotland on 1 May 1846 for house breaking. Gaol report: previously convicted 3 times for theft. 7 yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the ship 'Elizabeth & Henry' arriving there 4 Jan 1847. Single woman, but stated she was married as she had been living with William xxx (Craig?). One child, who accompanied her onboard ship. aged 26 yrs; housemaid; 5' height; Protestant; sallow complexion; brown hair; Hazel eyes. Native place of birth: Co. Monaghan, Ireland. Stated her proper name was "Maxwell" Note on record that her child died, at Brickfields (convict women's depot) on 6th Jan 1847 (just after her arrival). (ref. Convict Conduct record) Colony of VDL: Assigned out to service work. 6mth Probation Period. Clear good Conduct Record. 18 Dec 1849: Ticket of Leave granted. 2 May 1853: Certificate of Freedom issued. APPLICATION FOR PERMISSION TO MARRY: 31 Mar 1848 - Ann MAXWELL (Elizabeth & Henry) to John WHYLEY (or WILEY) (Waterloo). Approved. MARRIAGE: 24 April 1848 - Ann MAXWELL, aged 27 yrs, spinster to John WILEY, aged 30 yrs, labourer at Hobart. (ref. 37/1/7 no. 1670)
