Family connections for Hugh (McAvoy) are: Some amendments added Aug 2025. McAVOY Hugh (McA/Evoy) was born about 1773. He was tried at Lancaster Assizes, sentenced to 7years & arrived in NSW as a convict on 11 3 1803 after a voyage of 6months on HMS GLATTON. He is recorded in 1809 as having lease/grant in Sydney, later as having grants pending & working offtimes for the Police. He married Mary (Babbage/Palmer her second marriage) on 13 4 1812 at St Matthews CofE Windsor. He is recorded in 1814 as a labourer off stores. He died on 18 3 1841 age70. [Some details taken from this Website] Mary (Palmer) was born on 26 7 1765. She firstly married ??? (Babbage). She was tried w/1other for stealing, on 3 7 1802, calico at Middlesex Gaol Delivery, sentenced to 7years & arrived in NSW as a convict on 11 3 1803 after a voyage of 6months on HMS GLATTON. She is recorded in 1814 as off stores w/3children. She, as Mary (Palmer) emancipist, is recorded as dying on 20 11 1826 age58/61 mother of perhaps 4children [stated as wife of Henry (a name for Hugh?)]. [Some details taken from this Website] Hugh (McAvoy) & Mary (Babbage/Palmer) produced 4children: 1.Sarah (McAvoy) was born in 1803. She married firstly (1of3) Christopher (Crane) shoemaker on 20 11 1821 at St Phillips CofE Sydney & produced at least 4children. She died on 25 1 1851 age about47. [Noted a Sarah (Crane) wife of Christopher is recorded in Smees records as dying on 21 7 1830 age22 at Cumberland St Sydney & was buried at St James CofE Sydney] ..Christopher (Crane) was born about 1801 in England. He arrived in NSW with his mother on 19 1 1816 after a voyage of 6months on MARY ANN/E. He was a shoe maker in 1821 & is recorded in 1828 as shoemaker at Castlereagh St Sydney & also as a shoemaker in 1826 & 1829. He died on 22 6 1825 age26 [this information seems incorrect-from Smees records] age26 in Sydney by visitation of God & was buried at St Johns CofE Parramatta/St James CofE Sydney. ..Details of Christopher (Crane)s family are given in entry for John (Crane EARL SPENCER 1813) on this Website. .. 2.Mary (McAvoy) was born in 1805. He was tried for breaking entering & stealing jewelry of Mr (Pierce) of Droitwich at Warwick Assizes on 10 3 1821, sentenced to death reprieved to Life & arrived in NSW as a convict on 24 11 1821 after a voyage of 4months on HMS HINDOSTAN; he was Protestant. He was a combmaker in 1823. He married secondly Eliza (Davis age14) on 5 2 1826 in Sydney. He had his Ticket of Leave by 1828, & is recorded as farming 500acres with his wife at Botany district. He was recorded in 1829 as a cabinetmaker.
