Prisoners sent to Newcastle per H.M. Brig Princess Charlotte, 22 Oct 1819. John McCabe, per Guildford 2, tried by A. McArthur, Esq, 9 Oct 1819, Clerk, Sentence, Governor’s pleasure. -------------------------------------------------- To His Excellency, Lachlan Macquarie, Newcastle, October 1820. The humble Petition of John McCabe, a prisoner at Newcastle Settlement, Most respectfully Sheweth That Petitioner was convicted in Longford for seven years. That petitioner arrived in these territories in the Prison Ship Guildford the 2nd and shortly afterwards obtained (thro’ Your Excellency’s kindness) a Ticket of Leave, when he became a Classical assistant at the Public School, Parramatta. That petitioner continued in such employment for a considerable time until he had the misfortune to fall under the displeasure of the magistrates of Parramatta District who were pleased to send him to this settlement during your Excellency’s Pleasure, such order having been made on the 2nd day of Oct 1819. That since your petitioner arrived on this settlement he has cheerfully performed his Government work and in all things obeyed the Regulations established for its Government by the respectable officer in command. Under these circumstances Petitioner Humbly hopes your Excellency will grant him the Indulgence of returning to Head Quarters. And he will ever pray, Overwritten: The Gov. is pleased to grant the prayer of the Petitioner. The petition of John McCabe, prisoner of the Crown, most humbly sheweth , That your Excellency’s humble petitioner arrived in the Colony per Ship Guildford (2) in 1815 under sentence of transportation for Life. That petitioner, since his arrival in the Colony was for the most part in the employ of Government and on the formation of the Settlement of Port Macquarie was of the number who volunteered their services to form the new Settlement. That since Petitioner’s arrival at this station it has always been his sole ambition to act in conformity to the orders of the Authorities over him, and entertains a humble hope that his conduct has been such as to deserve their approbation.
