JOHN McCLEW, JAMES EWLING, JOSEPH DENHAM, Theft > simple larceny, 1st December 1831. 187. JOHN McCLEW , JAMES EWLING , and JOSEPH DENHAM were indicted for stealing, on the 12th of November , 1 shoe, value 1s. 6d. , the goods of John Irons . JOHN IRONS . I live in Union-street, Spitalfields , and am a shoemaker . This is my shoe; I was not at home when it was lost. WILLIAM MILLER . I live opposite the prosecutor. I knew he had lost two pairs of shoes on the 12th of November, and in about an hour afterwards (about nine o'clock) I saw the three prisoners go to his shop, and look in at the window - McClew put his hand in at a pane of glass, which had been broken the same evening, by the persons who stole the other shoes; he took this one shoe out, and was in the act of taking another - I ran out, and took him and Denham; the other ran off, but was pursued and taken. JOHN CLARK . I am an officer. I received the prisoners in charge. WILLIAM CLARK . I am an officer. I heard the cry of Stop thief! and Ewling, who was running, was stopped and given to me. McCLEW - GUILTY . Aged 14. EWLING - GUILTY . Aged 13. DENHAM - GUILTY . Aged 13. Transported for Seven Years . --------------------------------------------------- Hulk Records. HO-9-2_4 page 20/40. Euryalus. Nineteen arrived from Newgate, 19 Dec 1831. John McClew, age 14, Offence: Stg a shoe, tried at Middlesex, 1 Dec 1831, Life, NSW, Heroine, 30 Apr 1833. The prison hulk, the Euryalus, an ex-frigate of the Trafalgar fleet, was moored at Chatham. Over the twenty years that this hulk serviced juveniles, about 2,500 boys of fourteen and under passed through. There were also considerable numbers of older boys both in the juvenile hulk and distributed among the other hulks. From the Euryalus, boys were transported both to New South Wales and to Van Diemen’s Land.
