Born in Belfast, Antrim, Ireland Michael was convicted of stealing brass at the age of 16. At the time of his conviction, he had already served 2 years in prison. Convict Indents state he was 5ft 5 tall, fair ruddy and freckled complexion, brown hair, hazel eyes, mole back of right cheek bone, scar on inside of upper left arm and back of left thumb, and a tattoo of a blue cross inside lower left arm. Michael married free settler Elizabeth Murray in 1848 at East Maitland and had 7 children.
