13-Mar-1846: Janet Barnett, John Thomson, James McEwan, John Barnett for the crime of reset of theft at Oriel cottage, Colinton. Tried at High Court, Edinburgh. Note: The crime of reset of theft consists either in harbouring the person of the thief after the goods are stolen or in receiving or disposing of the goods. James McEwan, alias McEwing, a labourer of Colinton, Edinburgh, was found guilty. Verdict Comments: Guilty in terms of own confession, Sentence: Transportation - 7 years Previous convictions: theft. Note: Pannel cannot write. The remaining defendants were found not guilty or not proven guilty of the charge.
