NEWSPAPER REPORT OF TRIAL: From the Caledonian Mercury, 18 March, p3: “HIGH COURT OF JUSTICIARY… Hugh McGovan or McParlane, John McGrath, and James McCabe pleaded guilty to a charge of assault and robbery, as also theft, in so far as the prisoners, in November last, entered a house at Begbie, Haddington, occupied by Mr Hogg farmer, and assaulted Helen Stewart, his servant, presenting pistols at her, and forcing her into a closet, and assaulted Mr Hogg himself in a similar outrageous way, having fired a loaded gun over his head, and by threats of violence to him and his wife, compelled him to deliver up a silver watch, and taking and robbing her of 17s. besides some tablecloths and handkerchiefs. All the prisoners were sentenced to 21 years' transportation. The two prisoners, McGrath and McCabe, made their escape at the time of the robbery, and for two months baffled the exertions of the police; ultimately, through the exertions of Mr G. H. List, the active superintendent of the Haddington County Police, they were apprehended, and to him, and the other authorities, the highest praise is due for the energy which they displayed in tracing out this daring band.” (https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/) --00--
