No 12, during the week ending 14th January 1871, Flora Butters, for Obtaining goods by false pretences, sentence 2 years, per Duchess of Northumberland, F.S. Native place Scotland, Trade Servant, age 50yrs, 5 feet 1 inch high, prior conviction 12th Mar 1866, Resident of Hobart Town. Tasmania Police Gazette, 13th Jan 1871, p7. Absconder--On the 6th instant, from the House of Correction for Females, at the Cascades. Flora Butters, per Duchess of Northumberland. Since arrested by Hobart Police. Flora McINNES was convicted at Glasgow, Scotland on 30 Sept 1850 for theft - stealing a looking glass. Previous offence. 7yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the 'Duchess of Northumberland' 1853. Aged 25yrs; 4'10"; laundress; Presbyterian; widow, 1 child. Native Place: Glasgow Assigned out to various work services in the Colony. Ticket of Leave granted 21 Feb 1854 14 Nov 1854: Marriage to John BUTTERS (transported per ship 'Eden')(http://www.convictrecords.com.au/convicts/butters/john/4247) 3 Aug 1855: Conditional Pardon approved. 15 Mar 1858: Certificate of Freedom Child: Robert BUTTERS Admitted to Queens Orphanage, New Town, nr Hobart, on 25 Sept 1861, aged 5yrs 3mths. Father is John Butters, ship Eve 1 (mistranscription, should be Eden); Mother listed as Flora McGuiness (McInnes), ship Duchess of Northumberland. Remarks: “Mother in gaol, father had deserted”. Robert was discharged 16 Feb 1870 to James Elliott, Huon Road & again 5 Feb 1872 to Richard Lester at Franklin (employers). (Ref. Orphan 718) 17 April 1866: Convicted again, as Flora BUTTERS, at Hobart - stealing a looking glass (yes, same offence as original charge). 12 mths prison.
