James married fellow convict Bridget Reilly (Duke of Cornwall) on 14 April 1851, at the Manse of the Scottish Church in Evandale, Tasmania. Bridget died 26 November 1891. They are believed to be buried in an unmarked grave at the Church of the Holy Nativity, Bishopsbourne, Tasmania.
