Mary Sweenie and Margaret M’Laren were charged with theft, aggravated by being habit and repute thieves, and previously convicted, in so far as on the 9th September last, they stole from the pocket or person of Margaret Stirling or M'Luskie, when in a shop in High Street, three £1 bank-notes, a shilling, and some coppers. They pleaded not guilty. After trial they were found guilty, and sentenced to seven years transportation. Glasgow Courier, 23 Dec 1847. Margaret McLaren, 21 yrs, single, can not read nor write, a steam loom weaver, convicted of theft, habit repute, sentenced to 7 yrs at Glasgow on the 15 Feb 1848, 4 times previously convicted of theft,and 9 times imprisoned for various offences.
