Mary McLean/Eliza Purvis was convicted at Glasgow, Scotland for theft - stealing clothes. Previous conviction. 7 yr sentence. Transported to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) on the 'Asia' in 1847. Aged 22; single woman; Presbyterian; housemaid; can read & write. Native place - Dunbar Probation 6mths. Anson. Further notes of misconduct. Ticket of Leave 2 Dec 1851 3 Feb 1852 John Benson (per Maria 2), Coal Mines, Tasman Peninsular. Married 15 March 1852. Certificate of Freedom 21 March 1854 Further offences: Hobart Supreme Court 26 Jan 1859, Assault. Not Guilty. Hobart Supreme Court 27 April 1881 under name Mary Benson, housebreaking and larceny. Guilty. 12mths imprisonment.
