Francis McMahon was transported to NSW, aged 41, for only 7 years, found guilty at the Limerick Assizes in October 1798 of obtaining money by false pretences. While many men on board "Minerva" were transported for "being concerned in the rebellion" or other specific crimes relating to the rebellion or other political purposes, Francis was not one of these. His was a more garden-variety transportable crime. In the following NEWSPAPER REPORT, Thomas Dillon, tried at the same assizes as Francis McMahon, was also transported on "Minerva": Belfast Newsletter, Fri 19th October 1798 p. 3 "Friday [i.e. 12th October] the assizes for the county Limerick ended when the following persons received sentence: …. Francis McMahon, for obtaining money on false pretences, to be transported for seven years; Thomas Dillon, for cow stealing, to be transported for seven years.”
