Samuel Hare and Charles McAnulty for highway robbery, and David Gordon for passing forged notes, were brought to receive their sentence. His Lordship addressed them in the most feeling and impressive manner, and intimated to McAnulty, that the learned Judge, before whom he had been tried, had intimated his intention of recommending him to mercy, and that ultimately his life might be spared ; but for Samuel Hare and David Gordon, he could hold out no hopes of mercy, and observed that Hare’s was a case of peculiar atrocity. His Lordship proceeded admonish them in the most feeling and pathetic manner, on the necessity of their making intercession with God for their future salvation, a sincere and contrite repentance, during the period allowed to intervene between their sentence and execution. His Lordship was evidently much affected. At the conclusion of his impressive address, Gordon appeared affected with his melancholy situation, but Hare was perfectly callous and unconcerned. His Lordship did not name any particular day for the execution, while passing sentence, but afterwards it was learned that he had ... left for execution, .. Gordon and Hare for the 10th October and McAnulty for the ? November. Belfast Commercial Chronicle, 29 Sept 1821.
