ENNIS ASSIZES, AUGUST I. Michael Madigan, Michael O’Neal, Thomas Linnane, Daniel Kelly, John M’Namara, (Hugh) William Chambers, Patrick Degidan, John Kelly, Murtogh Kelly, Daniel Dixon, Luke Madigan, Michael Fox, and John Madigan, were severally indicted were severally indicted, for aiding and assisting one James Doyle in the wilful murder of Michael Cleary, at Labasheedy in February last. It appeared from the evidence, that on the day laid in the indictment, which was Sunday  two parties, called the Macgraths and the Birminghams, to the amount of persons, had desperate conflict at Labasheedy, from six o’clock in the morning until about one, during which a man, named James Doyle, rested a firelock on mud wall, in the morning until about one, during which a man, named James Doyle, rested a firelock on mud wall, presented it and fired, and instantly the deceased, Michael Cleary, fell, and died in about one minute after being shot. Others were armed with sticks, stones, &c. The prisoners belonged to the Macgrath party, and had their party chalked. The jury retired for about quarter of hour, when they returned, acquitting Michael Fox and John Madigan, and finding all the rest guilty of manslaughter. Five were sentenced to transportation for seven years the other six, to one year’s imprisonment. Belfast Commercial Chronicle, 13 Aug 1827.

John, alias HUGH, McNAMARA, was found guilty of "murder, manslaughter" according to indent of "Borodino" on which he was transported for 7 years. Tried Ennis, C Clare on 3 August 1827, aged 26 years. From Indent: *could read and write. Catholic. Single. * no prior convictions. * Native of Co Clare, ploughman and shepherd. * 5ft 4" tall, Dark ruddy complexion, Brown hair and BLUE eyes. Scaron top of head. * Disposed of from ship to the Surgeon Superintendant, George Tompson at Sydney.
