Supreme Criminal Court FRIDAY, MARCH 14. (BEFORE MR. JUSTICE DOWLING.) MURDER. Lot McNamara was indicted for the wilful murder of Janett, the wife of Duncan Mackellar, in the District of Upper Minto, on the 3rd of March instant. The information charged the prisoner with having inflicted divers mortal wounds on the head of the deceased, with an instrument called a hoe. Absconded prisoners. … Sydney Gazette, 17 March 1828. https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/2190088?searchTerm=Lot Mcnamara -------------------------------------------------- EXECUTION. On Monday, the sentence of the law was carried into effect upon the body of Lot McNamara, who was found guilty, on Friday last, of the murder of Mrs. Janet Mackellar, the wife of a respectable settler. The culprit was accompanied to the place of execution by the Rev. Mr. Power, who assisted him in his devotions. Up to the last moment the criminal endeavoured to mislead the public mind, by stating that he knew no more of the inhuman murder than Father Power, who, of course, could not be ignorant of the infatuated wretch's guilt, as at confession he must have disclosed the whole of the circumstances of his case, wherefore he spoke truly in saying, that he knew no more of the foul deed than Mr. Power. No doubt can rest on the mind of any one that McNamara committed the murder for which he suffered as the evidence on which he was found guilty was of the most satisfactory description, and there is another thing certain, he seemed to die as he had lived, hardened in iniquity. Sydney Gazette, Wed 19 Mar 1828.
