Convict Notes

Defenders. The Defenders were a Catholic secret society, formed originally in Armagh, to take action against the Protestant Peep o’ Day Boys. The Peep o’ Day boys set out on night raids against Catholics with the purpose of confiscating arms, which Catholics, under law, were not allowed to hold. By the 1790s they had set up secret lodges, with oaths of allegiance, sided with the United Irishmen in the 1798 rebellion, and by the 1900’s, developed into the Ribbonmen movement.
