1832: On arrival in VDL, John McVey, single, was listed as a 19 year old groom and carter. He was 5'6" tall with a dark complexion, dark brown hair and grey eyes (see https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON18-1-10$init=CON18-1-10p55). On his VDL Conduct Record, he is described as having good connections and behaving on the voyage in an orderly manner. In his own account of his crime, he calls it manslaughter.In spite of several entries about disorderly conduct, he received a Ticket of Leave on 9 October 1839. He was given a Conditional Pardon No.443 on 24 May 1842 (see https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON31-1-44$init=CON31-1-44p158).

1831, 31 December: JOHN McVEY and George McLeish were tried "for the crime of murder and assault at Fureen Street, Glasgow". Their victims were William Green and William Carlisle of Fureen Street, Glasgow. John McVey, 17, an ostler at the "Alexander Grant" at Gallowgate lived at Tureen Street, Glasgow. He was born in Calton, Glasgow. George McLeish, 17, was a paint miller of Tureen Street, Glasgow. He was born in Glasgow (see National Records of Scotland, Reference AD14/31/440).
