Convict Notes




Henry was a soldier in the '32nd Regiment at Foot, Regiment serving in Canada and was tried and convicted of Desertion at the Lower Canada Court Martial in Montreal on 20th September 1837, he was sentenced to be transported for life. Left England on 31st July 1838. Ship:- the 'Portsea' sailed with 240 male convicts on board of which 1 died during the voyage. Arrived on 18th December 1839. Henry seems to have been in a fairly long term relationship with Mary Craft (nee Purvey) from before 1849 and lasted at the earliest to after 1860, as their youngest child was born in 1860, and possibly much longer. There is no marriage record but they had 5 children between 1849-1860. Their children were Sarah, Harriet, Mary, Henry and Edward. Henry died on 2 March 1892 at Gosford, New South Wales, Australia and was buried at the St John's Anglican Cemetery, Lisarow, New South Wales age 81. Mary died in 1895 at Ourimbah in the Hunter district of New South Wales age 77.
