On Wednesday last the following convicts were removed from Springfield Gaol to the York hulk, lying off Gosport, prior to undergoing their respective sentences :—To be Transported for Life— … Jas. Welsh and Jas. Mead, for a burglary in the house of Sophia Renwick, at Wanstead; ... Chelmsford Chronicle, 9 May 1834.

TRIED: 3 March 1834 and convicted for burglary. This was not his first court appearance - he was previously imprisoned twice for assault. He was married to Mary who remained at his native place with their child (see https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON31-1-31$init=CON31-1-31p44).
