DestructiveΒ RiotΒ atΒ Wigan. β€” We regret to state, that on Monday night last, anotherΒ riotΒ of a nature not less disgraceful than those which occurred during the late election, took place atΒ Wigan. It appears that one of the riotersΒ at the election Β had been apprehended and committed for trial. The mob immediately broke open the gaol, and rescued the prisoner.Β Not content with this outrage, they next proceeded to the house of Mr. Kearsley, the member, the doors and windows of which they broke open, and then proceeded to destroy all the furniture, and even the wine in his cellars. They concluded by setting the house on fire! The military were called in, and by great exertion, the building was rescued from total destruction. The damage committed, however, amountsΒ we understand, to about Β£2000! Lancaster Gazette, 28 May 1831. Committed to Lancaster Castle.Β Barnabas Meadows, charged with having unlawfully, riotously and tumultuously assembled, together with divers other persons, at Wigan, Β and having begun to demolish and pull down the dwelling-house of John Hodgson Kearsley, Esq. Lancaster Gazette, 15 Oct 1831. Barnabas Meadows, 20, with riotously assembling with divers other persons, at Wigan, on the 23d day of May last, and having begun to destroy the house of John Hodson Kearsley, Esq. ... Β  Lancaster Gazette, 3 March 1832. THE WIGAN RIOTERS.β€”On Thursday week,Β Barnabas MeadowsΒ was sentenced to be transported seven years; .. Monmouthshire Merlin, 24 March 1832.
