Destructive Riot at Wigan. — We regret to state, that on Monday night last, another riot of a nature not less disgraceful than those which occurred during the late election, took place at Wigan. It appears that one of the rioters at the election had been apprehended and committed for trial. The mob immediately broke open the gaol, and rescued the prisoner. Not content with this outrage, they next proceeded to the house of Mr. Kearsley, the member, the doors and windows of which they broke open, and then proceeded to destroy all the furniture, and even the wine in his cellars. They concluded by setting the house on fire! The military were called in, and by great exertion, the building was rescued from total destruction. The damage committed, however, amounts we understand, to about £2000! Lancaster Gazette, 28 May 1831. Committed to Lancaster Castle. Richard Meadows, charged with with having unlawfully, riotously, and tumultuously assembled together, with divers other persons, at Wigan, and having begun to destroy, demolish, and pull down the dwelling-house of John Hodson Kearsley, Esq. Lancaster Gazette, 25 June 1831. THE WIGAN RIOTERS. James Thompson and Richard Meadows, two of the Wigan rioters, were then brought up, and his Lordship said he had, with some reluctance, forborne passing sentence of death, and had acceded to the recommendation of the Jury on account of their youth. It was melancholy to see two such young men, one of the age of 16 and the other 17 years in such a transactlon Lancaster Gazette, 27 Aug 1831.
