Thomas Francis Meagher name appears as one of the convicts transported from Richmond Prison, Dublin to the seaport Kingstown, county Dublin and from there on board the warship Swift commanded by Captain Aldham. It was on this ship that he and three other rebels, Terence Bellew McManus, William Smith O'Brien and Patrick O'Donoghue were transported to Van Diemen's Land.

on the day after his sentence was commuted to exile he changed his name to Thomas Francis O'Meagher.
