George Beals was an alias used by Esther's brother, George Merriman, Beale being his mother's maiden name. George was found guilty of being a pickpocket and also sentenced to 7 years transportation to Parramatta arriving in 1811. Esther died 18 Dec 1828 and was buried in St John's Cemetery, Parramatta NSW. Her grave is in the name of Esther Garland not Pooley or Pulley.

29/5/1805 George Beals and Esther Merryman were indicted for stealing 24 yds of printed cotton - value 30s. George Beals apparently being her brother, so she may have been married before being transported. George Beals - NOT GUILTY. Esther Merryman - GUILTY - Transported for 7 years. Esther married James Garland who was transported on the NILE in 1801 and tried at the Kent assizes - 7 years. They had 5 children, most of whom died very early in their life. James died in 1818 at the age of 34. Esther then married Martin Pooley (somestimes PULLEY) per SOMERSETSHIRE 1814 1795-1837 and and 1 child, Charles Pooley in 1819. 25/10/1814 From Col.Sec. recoreds On list of convicts disembarked from the Somersetshire and forwarded to Parramatta for distribution. Listed as POOLEY. The 1828 Census: Martin Pooley 45, Free per Somersetshire 1814, Farmer, Protestant. Esther Merriman 42 Free per Alexander 1804? Servant, Protestant. William Garland, 12, Born in colony, son of Esther, Protestant. Charles Pooley, 9, Born in colony, son of Martin, Protestant.
