The Royal Admiral was built at Lynn in 1828. Convicts were transported to New South Wales on the Royal Admiral in 1830, 1833, 1835 and to Van Diemen's Land in 1842. 1833 - Ship; Royal Admiral. Commenced fitting as a Convict Transport at Deptford on the 29 March. Surgeon Superintendent [Andrew Henderson] joined on the 3rd April. Guard embarked on the 13th. Sailed on the 17th and anchored in Kingston Barbour near Dublin on the 9th May. 220 convicts embarked on the 16 May 1833 and the ship sailed from Dublin Bay for Sydney on the 4th June and arrived there on the 20 October. Originally embarked with 221 convicts, 5 Died at sea, 1 was Relanded. 11 sick on shore, The convicts were described as 220 such wretchedly debilitated creatures ... In 1799 James was involved in the murder of two Indigenous children named Little George and Little Jemmy: “Timms held Little Jemmy so Metcalfe could shoot him ‘through the body.’” “When the Prisoners, including Constable Edward Powell, Simon Freebody, James Metcalfe, William Timms and William Butler, were ‘put to the Bar,’ they were informed that they had been found ‘generally GUILTY of KILLING two Natives.’”

Theft: theft from a specified place. 29th March 1792 Reference Number t17920329-2 Verdict Guilty > lesser offence Sentence Transportation JAMES METCALFE was indicted for feloniously stealing, on the 24th day of February last, five silver caster tops, value 5 s. five silver table-spoons, value 3 l. the goods of William Tovey ; and two silver tea-spoons, value 2 s. the goods of Ann Bolton ; in the dwelling-house of the said William Tovey. WILLIAM TOVEY sworn. On Friday, the 24th of February last, I was sitting at tea, about five o'clock, and had occasion to go into the yard; I saw the prisoner coming out of the parlour; I said, What do you do here? He said he wanted Mr. Jones, the watchmaker; I said, you are a thief, and I took him by the collar, and put him into the parlour; I searched him, and something fell from him; he knelt down and asked pardon, and said, that is all I got; I saw a silk and cotton handkerchief of my wife's. ANN BOLTON sworn. I saw the prisoner coming out of the parlour; he dropped the caster tops into a basket; I saw him feeling about the pockets of his coat, and he dropped a handkerchief; I picked it up, and he dropped on his knees. (Another witness corroborated this account.) JOSEPH BANKS sworn. I was at work at Mr. Tovey's; I was called down stairs: he was on his knees, and I fetched a constable; he said that was all he had got. JOHN GOOCH sworn. I went into the parlour for some teaspoons just before the alarm, not five minutes before the alarm; the things were all safe. GUILTY of stealing to the value of 5 s. only. Transported for 7 years. _____________ Sept.1799: Charged, with others, with the murder of two Aboriginal boys. 1802: Renting 10 acres of land at Mulgrave Place. 1806: Had a housekeeper, Jane Wilson (Surprize 1794). 1807: Married Jane Wilson. 1814: Living with Mary Thorpe at Windsor (Jane Wilson was co-habitating with Robert Forrester until his death 14/2/1827). 1822: had 30 acres of land at Windsor. After Robert Forresters' death, Jane reconciled with James Metcalfe. 10/3/1843: James Metcalfe died at Windsor, NSW.
