Dublin Correspondent Dublin, Republic of Ireland 13 Mar 1823 Michael Scales, Johanna Gorman, and Martin Campbell—Grand larceny. Michael Scales was listed as 26 years old on arrival. Native Place: Innis, Clare County. Michael was 5'8½" tall, blue eyes, brown hair, fair ruddy complexion. 18/9/1827: Permission to marry Bridget Smith (Brothers) - Bridget was 40 and on Bond - Michael was 30?? and on Bond. 1827: Married Bridget Smyth at St. Mary's, Sydney. No further marriages found..nothing found on Elizabeth. 21/7/1828 Sydney Gazette: COINING. William Moran, Michael Scales, and Elizabeth Scales, were indicted, under the statute, for falsely forging and counterfeiting ten pieces of foreign coin, called dollars. Mr. George Jilks, Chief Constable, stated, that, in consequence of information he had received, he proceeded, in company with Israel Chapman and Lewis Solomon, on the 3d of June last, to the Rose and Crown Tavern, in Castlereagh-street, and there apprehended the three prisoners. The prisoner Moran, and the female prisoner, were sitting next each other. When witness laid hold of the female prisoner, she dropped a base dollar on the floor, and, on being taken into an adjoining room, and searched, another dollar was found fast locked in her hand. The prisoner Scales attempted to rescue the woman, in consequence of which witness took him into custody. The female prisoner protested that she knew nothing about him, but he afterwards confessed that he was her husband. The Jury found a verdict of Guilty. Remanded for sentence. William Moran and Michael Scales sentenced to transportation for 7 years. Sent to Moreton Bay. 23/8/1829: Convict Death Register - Michael Scales died at Moreton Bay, aged 29.
