Family connections for William (Middleton) are: MIDDLETON William (Middleton) was born about 1776 & became a carpenter. He married Sarah (Gunn/Gunner) in Sussex (or on 9 4 1797 at Southwark London). He was tried for forgery at Surrey Assizes on 27 7 1812, sentenced to 14years & arrived in NSW as a convict on 9 10 1813 after a voyage of 5months on EARL SPENCER; although Smees records show him as dying at sea. He was issued his Ticket of Leave no.100/732 on 7 9 1814. He is recorded in 1822 as farmer at Appin with his family. His Ticket of Leave was renewed on 10 7 1823 as no.404/624; he was 5'8.25" dark ruddy complexion black hair dark hazel eyes. He is recorded in 1825 as carpenter with his family at Appin. He died on 20 1 1828 age52 & was buried at St Peters CofE Campbelltown. [Some details taken from this Website] Sarah (Gunn) arrived in NSW with her family following her husband on 10 1 1814 on HMS KANGAROO. She is recorded in 1822 at Appin with her family. She had a first relationship with Michael (Brennen his second relationship) of Appin & produced a child.>>> ..Michael (Brennan) was born about 1779/82 & became a general labourer. He was apparantly tried with his brother Moses & 1other after the 1798 Wexford Ireland uprising at the Wexford Summer Assizes on 27 7 1799. sentenced to Life & arrived in NSW as an Irish Rebel on 26 1 1801 after a voyage of 7months on ANNE; during the voyage he assisted the keeping of order after a mutiny; he was apparantly Catholic. He leased a farm at Cooks River. He had a first relationship with Elizabeth (Smith) whom he later married. He was Free by Servitude by 1811 & was issued his Ticket of Leave. He was issued his Conditional Pardon on 31 1 1813. On 8 10 1816 he was granted 50acres at Appin, next to his brother-he shared a house with his brothers family. He had his Conditional Pardon & was living at Appin when he married Elizabeth (Smith) on 19 2 1825 at St Marys RC Sydney. John died in 1828, prior to the census. I have been unable to locate Sarah in the census, although she did not die until 1836. Several of the children are however recorded:- [Ref M2351] Middleton, Sarah, 19 born in the colony. with Mr Warby. [Ref M2352] Middleton, William, 1, born in the colony. with Mr Warby. Several of the girls are with their families. [Ref W0521] Warby, Jemima, 25, CF, Kangaroo, 1813, Murrumbidgee. [Ref M2350] Middleton, Eliza, 12, born in the colony, Protestant, at Mr. Allen, G. Plains.

In the 1822 Muster/Census we have the family.. Middleton, Jemima, came free, Kangaroo, wife of W. Warby, Liverpool. Middleton, William, ticket of leave, Earl Spencer, 14 years, farmer, Appin. Middleton, Sarah, came free, Kangaroo, wife of above, Appin. Middleton, 14, born in the colony, child of above. Middleton, born in the colony, child of above. Middleton, born in the colony, child of above. Middleton, 7, born in the colony, child of above. {The last 4 children un-named} In the 1825 we again have the family... Middleton, William, ticket of leave, Earl Spencer, 1813, 14 years, carpenter residing in his wife's grant at Appin. Middleton, Sarah, came free, Kangaroo, 1814, wife of William Middleton, Appin. Middleton, Caroline, 16, came free, Kangaroo, 1814, child of William Middleton, Appin. Middleton, Elizabeth, 9, born in the colony, child of above. Middleton, William, 11, born in the colony, child of above. Middleton, Sarah, 18, born in the colony, child of above. Middleton, Jemima, came free, Kangaroo, 1814, wife of William Warby. {# Note, William Warby, Jemima's husband was not a transported convict, but had been born in the colony, he married Jemima in 1821 but was often in trouble and was eventually transported himself, to Van Diemen's Land for 14 years.

William had been married in England, prior to his sentencing. He had married Sarah Gunner at Southwark, London on April 9th 1797. The couple had 3 children in England. When William was transported aboard, Earl Spencer, Sarah and the children obtained passage on HM Armed Brig "Kangaroo" soon thereafter.
