Richard appeared at the Hertford, Liberty of St Albans, Quarter Sessions on the 21st APR 1814 he was described as being employed as a ploughman labourer, 5’10”tall, sallow complexion, black hair and hazel eyes. He was charged with “feloniously steal, take and carry away, four bushels of wheat of the value of 30 shillings, the Goods and Chattels of one John Lines”. Richard was found guilty and sentenced to 7 years transportation. He remained incarcerated at St Albans Gaol until JAN 1815 when he and another prisoner, John Hough, were fettered and carted from St Albans to Woolwich, to board the Justitia Prison Hulk. Here he worked a 10 hour shift in the government dockyards, stared and gawked at by tourists and townspeople. 8 months later, on 25th AUG 1815 Richard embarked on the “Fanny” and arrived at Port Jackson 14th JAN 1816.
