JOHN MILLIGAN, Theft > embezzlement, 15th February 1809. 188. JOHN MILLIGAN was indicted for that he on the 2nd of December , was clerk to James Lee , John Scott Martineau and James Wilkinson , and was employed and entrusted by them to receive valuable securities for and on their account, and being such servant so employed and entrusted, did receive and take into his possession, a banker's draft, value 72 l. their property, and that he on the same day, feloniously did embezzle, secrete, and steal the said draft . To this indictment the prisoner pleaded GUILTY . Transported for Seven Years . London jury, before Mr. Common Serjeant. Campbell, Sec. … John Milligan, one of the Convicts now sent, has been employed in my office since the time of his arrival here until the present, but from having grossly neglected his duty there and formed bad and dangerous connexions, he is now sent to feel the ill effects of his bad conduct and to remove him from the ruin that he would probably have involved himself in, had he been permitted to remain longer here. I hope his future behaviour may be such as to induce you some months hence to speak more favourably of him than I am enabled to do at present, and should such be the case, I shall be happy to intercede for his return hither, with the Governor. ... ----------------------------------------------------- Prisoner at Newcastle. By return of the Estramina you will please to send hither the following five Persons, namely, 1. Carman Rigs. 2, Ann Barry. 3 Mary Gee. 4. Rose Lovatt. 5, John Milligan. The remainder of their sentences being now remitted by the Governor and you will please inform John Milligan that the remission of his sentence to Newcastle is made in the hope that he will by this experience of Punishment, benefit, and conduct himself more becomingly for the future. Lady Nelson now under dispatch for the Coal Run, four male prisoners are embarked to be employed under your Command in the usual way. The Names & Sentences of these men are inserted in the enclosed List to which you will please to refer. One of them named, John Milligan who has been for some time a Clerk in my office, is now sent for a second time in consequence of neglect of duty, Drunkenness and keeping bad company.
