He enlisted in NSW Corps on 27 7 1789 as a private & arrived in NSW as a soldier on 26 6 1790 after a voyage of 6months on Fleet ship SCARBOROUGH; a voyage noted for extreme brutality of prisoners with a high death rate. In 1794 he was granted 25acres at Iron Cove Creek. In 1798 he was detached to (McArthur)s company until he was discharged on 8 5 1801. In 1803 he was granted 100acres at Evan. He was described at his marriage in 1805 as formerly with NSW Corps. He was granted a further 100acres at Evan in 1809. He is recorded as alive in 1811. Saturday last, Betty Mitchell, of Westbury, was committed to Fisherton Gaol, charged on the oath of John Helps, of Studley, farmer, on a violent suspicion of having aided and assisted in breaking open his dwelling-house, and stealing five cheeses, some childbed linen, and a piece of Holland cloth; and also with having part of the said property on her possession.
