Convict Notes

In June 1846, the accused John Kane and James Mitchell appeared at the High Court of Justiciary (described as late watchmen of Edinburgh Police) charged - in January 1846 theft by housebreaking. John Kane received 14 years' transportation and James Mitchell 10 years' transportation. Circumstances of the case are outlined in the Convict Record of John Kane transported 19 September 1851. The delay in transportation of both accused is not explained - see Scotsman newspaper 17 June 1846 p 3 on 'High Court of Justiciary - Case of Kane & Mitchell City Police'.
