Tasmanian Records. Convict Conduct Record: https://libraries.tas.gov.au/Digital/CON31-1-31/CON31-1-31P42 No 1275. John Mitchell, Tried York West Riding Q.S. 2 July 1834, 7 years. Transported for stealing Flour. Hulk report good, single. Stated this offence, Stealing wearing apparel from a Mill. Once fined &/- for breaking window. TL 9/4/1839. Conditional Pardon No 2439, 27 May 1840.




"Transported seven years. - John Mitchell (21), William Mitchell, (45) and Abraham Ackroyd (23) were convicted of stealing a quantity of wheat at Midgley, the property of Champion Murgatroyd; and Henry Riley (21) for receiving the same, knowing it to have been stolen." (Halifax Guardian, England, 1834) "It was a clear night, and he had full view of the prisoners; knows them all well; has known William Mitchell many years; John Mitchell is his son; has known Ackroyd several years; they all live in the neighbourhood of the mill ..."
