County of Antrim assizes. TRIAL ON A RAPE. Eneas Monaghan, for a rape on the person of Mary McKillop, on 15th June last. Mary McKillop- Knows Eneas Monaghan-identifies prisoner'-witness's father lives at the Glen, beside Larne- prisoner lives next town to her- went into his house 'about 10 o'clock in the -morning-she had a little child half- a-year old, in her arms, saw prisoner and his wife there- prisoner was in bed, and his wife was lying on the bed with her clothes on, and they were making fun together- his wife called to witness to help her out of bed- witness went forward and reached her hand to help her, and prisoner caught hold of it. Prisoner trailed her into the bed. Witness called for his wife to relieve her, His wife was sitting at the fire. It was in the kitchen, no other room in the house. The child was standing at the bed, crying. Laid it down when prisoner caught her hand. When prisoner's wife came to assist her, prisoner knocked her over seats or stools. Witness was thrown over at the time. Prisoner's wife gave no other assistance. Prisoner put the bed-clothes about witness's head, and did what he pleased with her. His wife called out that there were people about the door would hear him, and prisoner said he did not care if there were 20. Witness called out as long as she could- witness explained the abuse she received]- weitness is 14 years old past- he abused her against her will. Told what took place to her mother three days after. Was ashamed to tell her sooner. It was on Sunday it took place; her mother saw marks on the sheet the day after, and then questioned her about it.—Cross-ex - When she told it to her mother, witnesses mother did not like the tell her father, but she told witness's grandfather, and he told witness's father- her mother was afraid to tell her father for fear he would stick prisoner- after that, she and her father went to a Magistrate. (At this time witness grew faint, and had to retire.) Her father heard of it on Friday, and it was either on Monday or Tuesday he went to the Magistrate, was about week and some days after It happened they went to the Magistrate-; she was about ten minutes in prisoner's house before he forced .her into bed- had said nothing to prisoner's wife-- his wife said nothing to witness about clean feet- it was about ten o'clock in the morning- heard no person outside of the house- his wife did not scold her for going near her husband's bed-did not go to the bed by herself- it is 6 weeks last Sunday, since it occurred- saw prisoner's wife coming for a can of water after that; never told prisoner's wife, nor sent word to her, that if the prisoner did not send her' money she would have a pretty story to tell about him; does not recollect the Magistrate asking her why she did not come sooner before him to tell her story; will swear nothing against the man but what is right; does not know Christopher Farrell, a policeman; she had never made a charge against the prisoner for having committed a rape on her before that; ….
