William Monk, aged 18, charged with having broken and entered the dwelling-house of Edward Clack, at Stoken church, in the day-time, and stealing several articles, his property. Guilty. Oxford University and City Herald, 11 July 1812. John Williams and William Monk, condemned our last assizes for house-breaking, are reprieved; Charles Nightingale for uttering forged note, remains. Oxford University and City Herald, 18 July 1812. On Thursday last Charles Nightingale, John Williams, and William Monk, were removed from our county gaol to the hulks at Portsmouth, transported for the term of their natural lives; and William Savory and Thomas Carpenter, tor the term of seven years. The Humble Petition of William Monks, Respectfully sets forth, That your Excellency’s Petitioner was sentenced for Life at Oxford 1812. Came to this Colony in the ship Earl Spencer 2nd Capt Mitchel, about six years ago; and has mostly been employed as the Government Man of Isaac Tarr, the Lime Burner at Field of Mars. Petitioner is now married to the daughter of his Employer by whom he has a child and most humbly hopes that the marked Industry and dilligence he has so long devoted for benefit of Employer and ? Will graciously induce Your Excellency to confer some favor upon Petitioner on behalf of Family and the awful sentence he at present labours under. And your Excellency ‘s petitioner will ever most gratefully pray… William Monks. I have known Petitioner for near six years and consider him a sober, industrious man. (Signed ) ? Supt. He was tried for breaking & entering house of Edward (Clack) of Stoken church & stealing articles at Oxford Assizes, sentenced apparantly to death reprieved to Life, held on hulks at Portsmouth Hampshire & arrived in NSW as a convict on 9 10 1813 after a voyage of 5months on EARL SPENCER; he was forwarded to Rev Samuel (Marsden) at Parramatta for distribution. He married Elizabeth Matilda (Tar/r) on 4 5 1818 with permission at St Johns CofE Parramatta. He was a limeburner at Field of Mars in 1818 & 1819 working for his father in law Isaac (Tar). He may have ben issued his Ticket of Leave in 1819. He was Free by Servitude by 1821. On 25 7 1822 he was appointed as constable at Parramatta until he resigned on 6 8 1823. He was recorded in 1826 as a labourer at Parramatta, in 1828 as a landowner at Parramatta & in 1830 as servant in Sydney. [Some details taken from this Website] Elizabeth Matilda (Tar/r) daughter of Isaac (Tar) was born on 7/17 1 1799 & baptised on 3 2 1799 at St Johns CofE Parramatta. Her mother was living with her in 1828. She died in 1836 age about37. William (Monks) & Elizabeth (Tar/r) & produced at least 5children: 1.William (Monks) was born on 5 3 1819 & baptised on 21 5 1826 age7 w/Elizabeth Matilda & Mary at St Johns CofE Parramatta. 2.Elizabeth Matilda (Monk) was born on 31 12 1821 at Parramatta & baptised on 21 5 1826 age4 w/William & Mary at St Johns CofE Parramatta. 3.Mary (Monk) was born on 27 12 1825 at Parramatta & baptised on 21 5 1826 age4 w/William & Elizabeth Matilda at St Johns CofE Parramatta. 4.Samuel (Monk) was born on 17 6 1828. He died on 16 6 1828 age4d at Parramatta & was buried at St Johns CofE Parramatta. 5.Mary Ann (Monk) was born on 3 2 1830 in Sydney & baptised on 9 2 1830 at St Phillips CofE Sydney.
