There is a black man, a prisoner of the crown, named Ephraim Montgomery under examination at the Police Office who under the fictitious cognomen of John Williams has been endeavouring to rob and swindle several respectable shopkeepers about town. Having gone to Mr. Toogood's Eating House in King Street, and offered for sale a delft sauce tureen, Mr. T. questioned him as to the mode by which it was obtained. His evident embarrassment aud inability to account satisfactorily for its possession excited suspicion and caused him to be apprehended. It afterwards appeared that a Mr. Harriet, a publican, was induced to cash a note of band, endorsed, at his request, with his mark as John Williams. The fellow hoping to baffle the prosecution against him, managed to exchange his hat, but Mr. Toogood found small difficulty in identifying him. Sydney Gazette, 5 May 1836
