Old Bailey . Tried 3 July 1834. 1013. MARY MORGAN was indicted for stealing, on the 24th of May , 20 yards of cotton, value 8s.; and 5 yards of calico, value 2s. ; the goods of Thomas Gardner . SUSAN GARDNER . I am the wife of Thomas Gardner, he is a linen-draper , and lives in Norton-falgate . On the 24th of May, this property was lost from our shop. THOMAS COX . I was serving in the shop - the prisoner came and asked to look at some prints - I showed her some - she did not buy any - she then asked to look at some calico - she bought a remnant for 3d., and paid for it, and went away - nothing occurred till the officer brought back the goods, which are ours - they had been on the counter where she had been dealing - I did not see them taken - I swear she is the person. JOHN COLLINS (police-constable N 108). I was on duty in Kingsland-road, and was called to take the prisoner - I found these articles and seven handkerchiefs in her basket. Prisoner. Pray have mercy on me for the sake of my eight children. GUILTY . Aged 32. 1014. MARY MORGAN was again indicted for stealing, on the 24th of May , 1 petticoat, value 1s.; 1 child's shirt, value 6d.; and 6 cakes, value 3d. , the goods of Thurston Worts . THURSTON WORTS. I am a baker . On the 24th of May, the prisoner came into my shop, and asked for a 2lb. loaf about two o'clock - my wife went to weigh the loaf, and when she went back she saw these articles, which are my property, in the prisoner's basket - she offered great resistance to my wife - I shut the door and had her secured - she threw herself on her knees, and offered us all she had to let her go - the other property was found in her basket. GUILTY . Aged 32. - Transported Seven Years . 1015. MARY MORGAN was again indicted for stealing, on the 24th of May , 7 handkerchiefs, value 4s. , the goods of Thomas Hall . THOMAS HALL. I am a linen-draper , and live in Bishopsgate-street . The officer brought these handkerchiefs to my house - I know they are mine, and had not been sold - I had not seen the prisoner. GEORGE HULLS . I am shopman to Mr. Hall. The prisoner came to the shop between eleven and one o'clock, on the 24th May - she bought a remnant of print and a yard and a half of calico - I did not miss the handkerchiefs till the officer came with them, in two or three hours after - they are my master's and had not been sold - she paid 1s. 8d. for what she bought. JOHN COLLINS . I took the prisoner - I found these handkerchiefs in the basket with the other things. GUILTY . Aged 32. - Transported Seven Years more . (Source: Old Bailey On-line.) Mary was transported to Tasmania with her 8 children. She was pregnant with her 9th child born on the New Grove, a baby girl. Sadly this baby died in Hobart sometime after 1835.

This Mary Morgan did not have an alias. She was not known as Mary Pearce.

N.B. There are two Mary Morgan's on this sailing of the 'New Grove' 1834/35. This Mary Morgan was convicted at Middlesex, London for Larceny - 14 yr Transportation sentence. (ref. Convict Conduct record http://search.archives.tas.gov.au/ImageViewer/image_viewer.htm?CON40-1-7,312,107,L,46. Previous convictions. Married woman, husband John a labourer. 8 children. 9th child born onboard ship. (8 girls, 1 boy). Anticipated her husband would be joining her. The 'Description' reference which comes up online, is in fact for the other Mary Morgan, from Wales. Therefore this Mary Morgan is from Blackfriars, England, aged 33 yrs. VDL: Six of Mary's children were placed in St. John's Orphanage, New Town, nr Hobart. (This was usually a requirement by the Govt., so that the mother was available to carry out assigned tasks.) (ref. Friends of the Orphan School) Children: Mary, Alice, John, Catherine (Kate), Elizabeth & Ann MORGAN. Conduct Record: 1835: at New Norfolk, VDL. 27 May 1840: Ticket of Leave granted. 1 July 1842: Conditional Pardon, no. 654 approved.

Mary was transported with her 9 children. A baby died on the voyage and was buried at sea.
