That Henry Townsend was not hanged but sent to Port Arthur until his release in 1873 in fact after the trial finished in 1859 the trail goes cold...newspaperwise!I have not been able to confirm his release from Port Arthur historic society but I have a copy of his release from LINC TASMANIA...He was my GG Grandfather..Paul Venema

Thomas Morgan was 37 years old when transported with James Smith alias Hone and his brother John Smith, all on board. Thomas was 5'7 3/4" tall, sallow complexion, black hair and whiskers, dark eyes, native place: near Biddesfield, 2 blue dots on right wrist, large mole left side of left eye. 6 years probation at Port Arthur. 31/3/1857: TOL 26/7/1859: CP 3/11/1859: Hobart Town Dailey Mercury: Remanded.-William Turner, Henry Townsend, and Thomas Morgan were brought up on remand, charged with feloniously shooting, at Swanton, Constable Wells, with intent to kill and murder him. Upon the application of Mr. Sub - Inspector Weale the prisoners were further remanded until to-morrow (this day) when the evidence against them will be adduced. William Turner and Henry Townsend were sentenced to be hanged. Thomas Morgan had a death sentence commuted to life. 2/12/1868: Last sentence remitted. 19/12/1868: Freedom.
