Convict Notes

Alphabetical Registers of Male Convicts. (CON23) No; 986 Name; Richard Mortimer Ship; Katherine Stew. Forbes - 16 July 1832 Trial; Surrey - 19 Dec 1831 - Life Remarks; DIED; on the Passage of the Cholera

1831, 19 December: Richard Mortimer was tried at the Kingston Upon Thames Special Sessions. He ws sentenced to death for horse stealing, commuted to transportation for life (see England & Wales, Criminal Registers, 1791-1892; England, Surrey 1831). 1832, 18 January: He was admitted to the Justitia prison hulk at Woolwich where he was listed as 18 years old, and single. He was sent from there for transportation on 10 February 1832 (see UK, Prison Hulk Registers and Letter Books, 1802-1849; Justitia Register 1803-1836). 1832: The exact date of his death is not given, but records suggest he died during the voyage, rather than on and after arrival, as his Convict Record for VDL merely states "Died of cholera".

Richard Mortimer died on the voyage, of Cholera.
