Transported for obtaining money by false pretences. Gaol report- convicted before, Hulk report, orderly, married, Stated this offence: Fraud, obtaining money for a co? ?, once for pawning a Bridle, & saddle, 6 months. Married, 1 child, Wife, Louisa at native place, Edgeware Road. Surgeon’s report, A very industrious man. TL 8.38. Conditional Pardon No 2097, 30 July 1840. Free Cert No 19/841. JOHN MORTLOCK was indicted for stealing, on the 13th of October , 1 saddle, value 30s., and 1 bridle, value 10s. , the goods of James Thomas . JAMES THOMAS . I am a livery-stable keeper , and live in Cumberland-mews . On the 12th of October, the prisoner came and brought a bay mare - he told me he was Mr. Best's servant, and that he was stopping at Long's Hotel, in Bond-street; he brought an old bridle and saddle with the mare, and said his master had bought her of Mr. Shirley, of Staines, who had lent him the bridle and saddle to bring the mare home, and he asked me to lend him a bridle and saddle for his master to ride out with the next day; I lent them to him for his master, as I supposed - he took them away; he said his master would send me three or four more horses; he came again on the same day, and hired a horse and gig for a friend of his master's - it was brought back, but I have never been paid for it; the bridle and saddle I lent him were very good, but not new - I have never seen the mare since, but I have found the saddle and bridle at a pawnbroker's - I knew the prisoner before. RICHARD WALCOCKS FAIRLAM . I am a pawnbroker. I took in this bridle and saddle on the 13th of October, from Thomas Darvey. THOMAS DARVEY . I drive a Paddington Omnibus. I saw the prisoner and another young man in a horse and chaise - they asked me to pawn the saddle and bridle, which I did, for a guinea; I gave the duplicate and the money to the prisoner - I had seen him once or twice before, and thought him a respectable man. Prisoner's Defence. I was in great distress, and had an execution in my house for rent. GUILTY . Aged 33. - Confined Six Months. ----------------------------------------------------------------




John Mortlock born 1799 in Middlesex. He married Louisa Tapfield had one daughter. 1834 Arrived Tasmania on the convict ship “William Metcalfe”. 1 April 1844 - John Mortlock (Widower) Free, married Mary Caroline Smith (nee Welch)/(Widow) Convict, at Longford, Tasmania, had three children. Both worked at Brickendon Estate Longford. John Mortlock Coachman & Mary Smith Servant. There is a confusion with John Frederick Mortlock from Cambridge UK arrived on the Maitland 1844 & Sultana 1852 (Escaping/returning from transportation).
