Convict Notes

Bury and Suffolk Herald 16/3/1832: Samuel Mortlock of Cavendish, aged 34 years was convicted of having stolen 2© bushels of potatoes the property of John Firman a farmer of Cavendish. 7 years transportation. Samuel was sentenced to transportation before - 7 years for stealing cheese - served 1 year and 9 months at Portsmouth. Samuel was 5'1 1/4" or 5'10 1/4" tall, blue eyes, light brown hair, several moles on neck, married - wife Mary and 2 or 3 children at native place of Cavendish. 1832/33: Assigned to Mr Gunn. 1835: Was a constable. By 1838: had a TOL 1842: Free Certificate. From "The Mortlock Blacksmiths" Samuel of Freckenham born in 1787. The gaps in the birth order of his children fit with his enforced absences, and his unfortunate wife may be the Mary who had children in Cavendish without the assistance of a husband in 1828 and 1834. Some prison hulk records put Samuel as born 1794 or 1798, but I think that ‘age 21’ in those records may just mean ‘over 21’: 1. Charged with larceny at Bury St Edmunds Quarter Sessions 1807 but discharged ‘ignoramus’ (which probably means no witnesses turned up). 2. In Bury Gaol 7.1809 (with two FLACKS) [LG 1.7. & 8.7.1809]. 3.Convicted at Bury St Edmunds Quarter Sessions 17.7.1815 & given 7 yrs transportation for grand larceny (with two others) for ‘stealing from a waggon’ [IJ]. Sent to hulk Captivity, discharged ‘FP’[?] 27.7.20. 4. Charged again and acquitted (‘no bill’) October 1827. 5. 7yrs transportation for larceny (with two others), Bury St Edmunds 7.5.1832 (but already on board ship - on the sick list 5.5-11.5.1832); hulk Hardy ‘transported before’; transported in Lord William Bentinck; in Tasmania 1832, 1833, 1835, 1841; ‘promoted’ 1835 in Tasmania. No marriage found in VDL. 1865: Samuel died in Hobart.
