Convict Notes

1892, 6 August: John Muirhead (born in Scotland) died at Launceston from "senility". He was listed as a labourer, aged 73 [but this is at odds with other records of his birth date that would place his age as 78/79]. John was buried on 10 August 1892 (see https://stors.tas.gov.au/RGD35-1-61p23j2k).

1831, 19 September: John Muirhead, 18, a carter from Paisley, Renfrewshire, was tried and convicted in the High Court at Glasgow for "the crime of theft, habit and repute at Broomland Street, Paisley" against John Logan of Broomland Street (see National Records of Scotland, Reference JC26/1831/227). 1832: On arrival in VDL, John Muirhead was listed as 20 years old and a labourer. His VDL Conduct Record runs to several pages of entries about "misdemeanours" such as drunkenness and petty theft which often resulted in punishments of several hours in the stocks or days/months in chains on road gangs. 1844, 1 January: Granted a Ticket of Leave. 1844, 7 September: He was convicted for feloniously receiving under five pounds - sentenced to 12 months' hard labour in chains and forfeited his Ticket of Leave (see https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON32-1-4$init=CON32-1-4p74).
