Edit: The letter from Norfolk Island recommending he be admitted to the first class was date Aug 1836, not 1843.

He was definitely on Norfolk Island, new records show in 1839 her sentence was commuted to 7 years and 1843 he was recommended and accepted into the first class.

I have references saying he was sent to Norfolk Island after his murder conviction. However I can find no trace of him there either.

Matthias was granted freedom in 1816 and land in Richmond NSW He became a Constable, married and had two children. His wife died in about 1827 and he remarried in 1828. His new wife was not of sober habits and 8 weeks after their marriage he killed her (accidentally according to him) by strangling her in a dwelling in Darling Harbour Sydney. He was sentenced to hang but a large number of people petitioned and he was given banishment to Moreton Island Penal Colony in 1828.
