Convict Notes

Notice in Colonial Times, 14 Jan 1851: I GEORGE HUMPHREYS, of No. 50,9 Bishop-street, in the city of Dublin, M.D., do solemnly and sincerely declare that I called on Mr. Peter Mulvey, auctioneer, to lend me his name and endorse a bill for my accommodation for £300, accepted by John Gumley, Esq., payable in the bank of Messrs. Latauch & Co., which bill was forged by James Brown, my servant man, whom I sent fifty nine miles to get it accepted. Before the bill was pro- tested as a forgery, Brown quit my service, and went to India to evade his detection. I then was compelled to turn insolvent, and get my schedule made out for ¿£1600. When Mr. Mulvey returned to Dublin from America, my assignees found he was to receive a large sum of money, in 12, Hume-street, amounting to £50,400, on the 2nd July, 1844. They had him arrested, he being the last name on said bill ; was tried before Barons Lefroy and Dougherty : received sentence seven years. I proved at said trial that Mr. Mulvey endorsed said bill by my desire and request, for my accommodation ; and that he never received a shilling of said amount. This statement I make by the request of the Committee in charge of Mulvey's Estate. Dublin, 15th August, 1850. GEORGE HUMPHREYS, M.D. Witness (JOSEPH SCOTT MOORE, Solicitor,
