Upper Districts of Hunter's River.~John Mentzler, per Ship Duke of Portland, free, to be Constable, in the; Room of John B. Hewson, exchanged to Newcastle. By command of His Excellency the Governor, ALEXANDER McLEAY.




The National Archives, Kew. John Metzner was born in Spire, German States and served in the 60th Foot Regiment. He was 38 years old when discharged. Have not found his crime. Per "Duke of Portland", 1807 1811 Apr 5: Re permission to marry Elizabeth Palister at the Hawkesbury; appears as Minslow (Reel 6002; 4/3490D p.148) PALLISTER, Elizabeth. Per "Canada", 1810 No registration of marriage found, or if they did marry Elizabeth may have died before 1813. Found no other records about Elizabeth Pallister. 12/10/1813: Married Margaret Spannuel – Listed as “Mentzlow” – they married at St Phillips, Sydney. Margaret ‘came free’ per Recovery 1809. They had a son James born 29/5/1817 who married Winifred Murphy. 1813 Nov 6: Received certificate of freedom. To be struck off victualling list; appears as Muntzler (Reel 6002; 4/3491 p.591) 1816 Jan 16: On list of persons to receive grants of land in 1816; listed as Minslow (Fiche 3266; 9/2652 p.28) 1816 Oct 18: Under sentence of the Criminal Court. Petition of his wife Margaret praying to be allowed to go with him, if transported (Reel 6046; 4/1736 pp.135-7) -- John stole a pig from John Webb and was transported to Newcastle. 1816 Nov 21: On list of prisoners sent to Newcastle per "Lady Nelson"; listed as Minslow (Reel 6005; 4/3495 p.293) 1818 Apr 25: Constable at Newcastle.
