Convict Notes

Cambridge Assizes  JAMES …. was indicted for burglariously entering on the 23rd November last, the dwelling house of Thomas Peacock, at Soham, and taking thereout a pocket book, containing a Boston Bank Note, value 1£ and a purse, containing five shillings, his property.—Prosecutor, a brickmaker, residing in Soham, on the 23rd November last, locked his house up and went to chapel about six o'clock in the evening, returned about eight—found his back door open and window broken—he missed the property —witness noticed some footsteps, and went William Hitch's, where he found Murfitt in bed the pocket book and was returned to him by Robert Hitch—this witness underwent a severe cross-examination by Mr. Kelbf,  which considerably shook his testimony.— Robert Hitch found the property, from information received from prisoner, and gave it to the prosecutor.— ...brook, the constable, apprehended the prisoner, who confessed to him that broke the window, got in, took the property, and then let himself out the back door.— Guilty.— Sentence of Death recorded.  Huntingdon, Bedford and Peterborough Gazette, 28 Mar 1829. At Cambridge assizes last week, ... and James Murfitt, for burglary in the house of Thos. Peacock, at Soham; severally had sentence of death recorded against them. ... Stamford Mercury, 3 April 1829. On Tuesday last the under-named convicts were removed from the Castle, and the following day delivered on board the hulks at Gosport, in order to their being transported to New South Wales, viz.—William Gunn, Thos. Jeffery, James Smith, James Murfitt, and William Aill, for life ; James Berry, for fourteen years; and William Hill, for seven. Cambridge Chronicle, 15 May 1829.

He was originally sentenced to Death, was was changed to Life (see England & Wales Criminal Registers 1791-1892)

James Murfet/Murfett/Murfitt 1810–1894 BIRTH 6 OCTOBER 1810 • Soham, Cambridgeshire, England, United Kingdom (as per his convict records states clearly his native place was Soham Cambridgeshire) DEATH 20 MAY 1894 • Ballarat, Victoria, Australia

Ann Ramage, Married James Murfitt(b1810-d1894) on the 18/06/1832 in Hobart Tasmania. James came from Cambridgeshire, England his DEATH 20/05/1894 • Ballarat, Victoria, Australia James was also a convict sentenced to life but was commuted to 14 yrs Van Diemans Land..He came from St Mary's, Ely, Cambridgeshire England. He was baptized on the 6th October 1810. (this James Murfitt was the 'only ' James Murfitt who was brought to vdl on that ship and there were only two other possible James Murfitts the first one James Murfitt baptised 28 Nov 1808 it Cobham, Surrey and one James Murfitt whose 1951 census record suggests he was born around 1812 in Soham, Cambridgeshire. So the info saying that he came from Soham is not correct , that was another James Murfitt, NOT our one who arrived in vdl and married Ann Ramage. I have done extensive research into James details and am have had confirmation from geneology on this as well recently from Cambridgeshire. James is my 3d GG father. He married Ann on the 19th June 0832 in Hobart Town Tasmania. Later in life they moved to Geelong Victoria Australia, then within 5 yrs of that to Ballarat Vic Aust. Having several (about 9 children) both dying in Ballarat. if anyone would like to share more info or on other families members etc or if you are related to me then please get in touch with me at lady.tm.mackay@gmail.com

James was 18 years old on arrival in VDL. James was 5'3" tall, single, dark brown hair, hazel eyes, tattoos, native place: Soham, Cambridge. 1830-32: Assigned to Mr Foster. 1833-35: Was a Constable. Then in Ballarat where Henry was born 1855 (the other Henry must have died). I have a death date of 9/8/1901 for Ann Murfett in Ballarat, nothing concrete for James.

Pardon in 1843
