Catherine Murphy was convicted at Kings County, Ireland of Larceny - steal a watch. Tried with Jane Smith, who was also convicted and transported. She departed Dublin on the 'Australasia', voyage 314 on 26 June 1849, arriving Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) on 29 Sep 1849. Catherine was single, aged 21yrs, a housemaid, Roman Catholic, could read. Hazel eyes, brown hair, fair complexion. Surgeon's report from ship: "Quiet". She took ill of a fever on board and 23 July 1849 in the hospital, at sea. Convict no. 51613. Stationed on Anson's Hulk. 25 Sep 1850: Insolence - 3mths hard labour. 27 Sep 1850: Transferred to Hobart. Cascades Female Factory. 26 Oct 1852: Application for permission to marry John Cripps (convict per 'Frances Charlotte'). 29 Nov 1852: Married John Cripps.(Tas. Pioneer Index ref. 746/1852-37. John aged 33yrs, Catharine aged 23yrs.) 1 Feb 1853: Ticket of Leave. 31 Jan 1854 Recommended for Conditional Pardon. 19 Feb 1854: Conditional Pardon approved. April 1856: Certificate of Freedom. Note of a stillborn Murphy baby. Note of a cousin McGrath, in America. Note: some records name is spelt "Catharine". Ref in book "A Drift of Derwent Ducks" by Trudy Cowley, 2005.
