Catherine Murphy (2nd Catherine on ship) was charged at Co. Wexford 28 Feb 1851 of Larceny - steal handkerchief (previous convictions). 7yr sentence. Departed on the 'Martin Luther' 8 June 1852 from Dublin. Arrived Hobart, Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) on 1 Sep 1852. Convict no. 51615. 28 yrs of age; Single - but had 2 children, 1 on board (Phillip Blake. Stated Henry Blake was the father of this child.)(Young children were usually placed at Queens Orphanage, Hobart - so research needed to find what happened to this child.) Roman Catholic. Could read and write. Native Place: Dublin. 5'; ruddy complexion, freckled; red hair; dark eyes;large nose. Laundress, but could also cook. Assignments: 19/1/1852 - R. Henworthy, New Town Rd, Hobart. 8/9/1852 - House of Corrections, Hobart. 22/2/1853 - House of Corrections, Hobart. 4/3/1853 - Mrs. Henworthy, Mile Tavern. 12/10/1853 - House of Corrections, Hobart. 14/10/1853 - J. Moore, Guardian Office. 25/10/53 - Application to marry John Bynan (free person, aged 20yrs). 14/11/53 - Married John Bynan, St. Joseph's Church, Hobart. (ref. 819/1853-37). 26/9/1854 - Ticket of Leave granted. 9/6/1857 - Conditional Pardon. 28/2/1858 - Free Certificate. 28/8/1861 birth of John David Bynan, Launceston district. (ref. 325/1861-33) Brother: Philip Sister: Mary - both at Native Place. * Record has a note that she had a 2nd marriage, to Thomas Bush on 12/1/1857 Hobart. I cannot find a record of death for John Bynan, so this needs to be researched further as there were numerous Catherine Murphy's in the state at the time.
