Convict Notes

Hugh Murphy, for stealing a coat from John Thomas Forster. J.T. Forster examined.—Stated that he deals in old clothes; that the prisoner came to his shop to purchase a coat; that he shewed him one which the prisoner said would suit him, and that he would call again when received money for oats had in the market. He did come in the evening, accompanied by another man, and asked for the coat; they wished see another, and on the prosecutor turning to the shelf to hand another, the candle was artfully put out. On its being lighted the second person was gone, and with him the coat disappeared. This, the learned Baron remarked, was a dexterous transaction, such as might be expected from a trained thief from the London school. Guilty, to be transported for seven years. Enniskillen Chronicle, 23 March 1826.
