New South Wales, Australia Convict Ship Muster Rolls and Related Records, 1820 Lord Wellington Age; 24 When tried; Lent 1819 Crimes; Larceny of wearing apparel 1827 - The Hobart Town Gazette. Sat 6 Jan 1827. Page 4 POLICE OFFICE. John Middleton, a butcher in Melville-street, was committed to goal to take his trial for cruelly and inhumanly beating Mary Murphy on Monday last, " so that her life is despaired of." [The sentence means friends or family were fearful that he or she might die.]

Mary MURPHY was convicted at Cork, Ireland (Lent of 1819). 7yr transportation sentence. Sent to New South Wales, Australia per the 'Lord Wellington' 1819. Transferred to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the 'Princess Charlotte' 1820. Assignments of work service in VDL. Several records of misconduct, between 1822 & 1828. Time spent at the Female Factory, Hobart. Ticket of Leave granted. Record for her child John MURPHY admitted to St. John's Orphanage, New Town, nr Hobart - admitted 27 Jan 1829, aged 7 yrs. Discharged 1 Jan 1839 to Mr. J. Clarke (most likely an employer). It is noted that his mother is deceased and his father, John MIDDLETON, a convict. (Ref: SWD24p118, 28, CSO5/86/1885)
