Mary MURPHY was convicted at Monaghan, Ireland on 1 Jan 1845 for receiving stolen property - a piece of cloth, she stated was stolen by her daughter. 7yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (now Tasmania) on the ship 'Tasmania' arriving 3 Dec 1845. Aged 52yrs; housemaid;4'10 1/2"; pale complexion; grey hair; widow, 5 children (daughter Rose Murphy on board with her); Roman Catholic. Native Place - Co. Cavan, Ireland. Assigned to the Hulk 'Anson' upon arrival in the Colony. No remarks on her Conduct Record. Daughter Rose was admitted to St. John's Orphanage, New Town (near Hobart), as was required by the Govt for children of convict women, on 9 Dec 1845, aged 11 years. She was later discharged, on 22 Sept 1847 to the care of Mr. George Steward of Port Phillip (possibly an employer). (Ref. St. Johns Orphan School, Orphan 4045 SWD7 & 28).
