Convict Notes

Originally from County Armagh, Ireland GLASGOW HERALD 30TH APRIL 1852 Mary Murphy was next placed at the bar, charged with the crime of murder, in so far as on the 3rd or 4th day of December 1851, she took her own male child, then three months old, to a wood or plantation on the farm of Hargtonhill, situated in the parish of Cathcart, and did then and there wickedly and feloniously lay down the child on the ground in the wood, and mercilessly leave it there exposed; and her said child did then and there die, in consequence of its exposure by her as aforesaid, and of extreme cold and exhaustion, or from one or more of these causes; and her child was thus murdered by the said Mary Murphy. On being interrogated, the prisoner pleaded guilty to culpable homicide, which plea was accepted by the public prosecutor. Mr Pennie addressed the Court in exculpation. The Lord Justice Clerk then addressed the prisoner, and sentenced her to 7 years transportation.
